The Sierra Fund is thrilled to partner with the California Indian Environmental Alliance (CIEA) to offer a mercury health training for medical professionals as part of our upcoming Reclaiming the Sierra conference.  Attendees can receive continuing medical education (CME) credit upon request.

The following information is provided by CIEA about the training:

This training provides a background on how mercury gets into waterbodies and, subsequently as methylmercury, into the fish that we eat. Participants will learn how to identify at risk patients, how to advise patients to reduce mercury in their bodies, and receive an overview of the wide variety of symptoms of mercury exposure.

December 19, 2011

Cleaning off my desk to prepare for holiday time off and a new year is a bit like an archeological dig.  Dredging through the reports, magazines, letters and files I find lots of evidence of activity in the Sierra Nevada and the larger world – but what has been the impact of this work?  Especially, what has The Sierra Fund’s impact been on the ground?

Over the last year there have been real improvements in the quality of our place because of our work:

Yesterday, July 26, 2011, Assembly Bill 120 was approved by Governor Brown.  Among many other measures, the bill imposes important new factors into the process to create new regulations for suction dredge mining.

This is a victory for California’s environment, and we congratulate and thank all the organizations and individuals who have worked so hard to halt the harmful impacts of suction dredging under the old regulations.

Assembly Bill 120 affects suction dredge regulations in four ways:
