Jerry Meral served on The Sierra Fund Board of Directors from 2003 until 2011 when he was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Natural Resources Agency in charge of the Bay Delta Conservation Plan. Dr. Meral is retired as the Executive Director of the Planning and Conservation League. He previously served under Governor Jerry Brown as Deputy Director of the Department of Water Resources in the 1980's, and has become one of the state's outstanding experts on water and conservation issues. He was instrumental in the writing of nearly every resource conservation bond passed in the last twenty years, and is a well respected advocate for environmental causes. He also served on the Tuolumne Trust and Restore Hetch Hetchy Boards of Directors.

An avid back packer and river runner, Dr. Meral knows the Sierra intimately. He lives in Marin County.
